Designer in Focus: Thierry Lasry
It’s been 13 years since Thierry Lasry introduced his first collection of avant-garde eyewear - but the collection constantly surprises and delights us with its innovation and flair.
Though his eponymous line has been adorning the faces of the social Elite for over a decade, it’s only been in the past few years that the Thierry Lasry brand has truly skyrocketed, largely because fashion trends have taken a while to catch up to Lasry’s unwavering dedication to his design muse: the ‘80s.
As the fashion world woke up to the fabulousness that is “the ‘80s revisited,” Lasry’s frames started to be seen on the faces of the celebrity elite also known for their cutting edge style (think Madonna, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga).
From his own collections to his collaborations with brands like Local Authority, Rhude, Acne Studios, Enfants Riches Déprimés and his joint venture with Fendi, Lasry is as selective as he is pushing boundaries, always looking to innovate and challenge convention.
In fact, his collabs have reached beyond the scope of fashion labels to include innovators in other areas of design, like collections with interior designer Kelly Wearstler and LA’s most sought after tattoo artist, Dr. Woo.
Now, Thierry Lasry frames are carried by only the most exclusive retailers in the world like Barney’s, Bergdorf Goodman, Liberty of London, Dover Street Market, and – of course – HOLLY Eyewear.
Design and street cred aside (though it is some serious cred) it’s Lasry’s approach and process that put his frames in a category all their own.
As a designer with a hyper-focused commitment to his vision, every pair of Lasry’s frames can be succinctly described in two words:
FUTURISTIC VINTAGE.
His ability to synthesize vintage inspiration into an avant-gardist concept makes every pair of frames the kind that are stop-you-on-the-street It pieces.
But what is it, exactly, that makes Thierry Lasry frames so unique?
★ The child of an optician father and designer mother,
Lasry comes by his eyewear fascination honestly!
★ His motto: “back-to-the-future.” His design
process begins with sourcing vintage images,
materials, and design before reinterpreting their
nostalgia into something sharp, new, and futuristic.
★ His frames feature a signature flat front, one of the
key elements to creating his signature futuristic feel
to vintage-inspired shapes.
★ Unlike most eyewear manufacturers who use
cutting techniques to build acetate frames, Lasry
uses a unique process derived from sculpting to
develop his frames.
★ The name of model he designs ends with at least
one “Y,” a provocative letter found in both the
designer’s first and last name. He uses the “Y” as his tribute to the birth of each of his “babies.”
★ The true Elite, no matter how bold they seem, are
also subtle where it counts. For that reason, you’ll
never notice the brand logo on a Thierry Lasry
piece. It’s purposely placed on the inside of the
frame so as not to interrupt the creativity or focus on
design.
We’re thrilled that Thierry Lasry’s SS19 sunglass collection is already arriving at HOLLY.
Just in time to get yours before it’s summer in the city.
